Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directives
In 2003, the European Parliament passed the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives to encourage the reuse, recycling, and recovery of WEEE and to improve the environmental performance of all operators involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment, especially those dealing with WEEE.
The WEEE regulations apply to all electrical and electronic equipment placed on the European Union market that falls into any of ten (10) categories, unless the equipment is part of another type of equipment, which does not fall into any of these categories. Many of Symmetricom products are considered Category 3, IT and Telecommunication Equipment, and Category 9, Monitoring and Control Instruments.
Symmetricom is actively working with our European branch offices and local channel distributors who import Symmetricom products into the EU market to meet the objectives of WEEE.
For more information concerning WEEE compliance recycling, please contact Symmetricom’s recycler Technology Conservation Group at http://www.tcgrecycling.com/contact.htm to initiate the recycling process.
The Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances Directive
In 2004, the European Parliament and Council passed the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive to "protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in new equipment". The RoHS directive covers the same scope of electrical and electronic equipment that are under the WEEE directive, except that Category 8, Medical Devices, and Category 9, Monitoring and Control Instruments, which are under WEEE, are excluded from the RoHS directive.
Symmetricom's Timing, Test & Measurement Division:
The following product categories in Symmetricom's Timing, Test & Measurement Division fall under Category 9, which is currently outside of the RoHS directive's scope:
- GPS and Time Code Instrumentation
- Time and Frequency Distribution
- Precise Frequency References/Atomic Oscillators
- Bus Level Timing
- Time Displays
- Space, Defense and Avionics Products
- Phase Noise and Allan Deviation Test Sets
- Advanced Timing Solutions
The following product categories from the Timing, Test and Measurement Division of Symmetricom fall under Category 3 (IT and Telecommunications Equipment), including the RoHS exemption covering the use of lead in "solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications" and should comply with the RoHS directive.
- SyncServers S200, S250, S250i, S300, and S350
It is our goal to ensure that the SyncServer products comply with the RoHS directive on or before October 1, 2006.

Symmetricom products are used in various applications that may affect customer requirements for RoHS compliance. In most instances, Symmetricom customers do not require RoHS compliant products, including customers using Symmetricom products for development or production of their end products that fall outside the scope of the RoHS directive, as well as customers who embed a Symmetricom product in an end product that is classified under either Category 8 or Category 9 of WEEE. A Symmetricom product that is a component of an end product requires RoHS compliance only if the end product falls within the RoHS directive's scope. Symmetricom will actively work with these customers to address their needs in the future.
Symmetricom recognizes that eliminating certain hazardous substances from our products is beneficial not only to the environment but also to Symmetricom’s customers and employees, and we are working towards ensuring that our products comply with the RoHS directive wherever possible. In our continuing efforts to achieve RoHS compliance for our products, the Symmetricom RoHS Compliance Team is actively working with our component suppliers to ensure their compliance with the RoHS directive. Additionally, Symmetricom manufacturing and engineering teams are currently working to adapt our products to use RoHS compliant components and manufacturing processes.
